Show or Display Eligible Vehicles: Official 2026 NHTSA List

Updated July 24, 2026 from NHTSA’s official March 17, 2026 eligibility list.

The federal Show or Display exemption allows certain historically or technologically significant vehicles to be imported into the United States even though they were not originally certified to all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. It is a narrow NHTSA exemption, not a general shortcut for importing any unusual car.

The 25 year rule changes the practical list every day

A vehicle becomes exempt from FMVSS when it is 25 years old based on its actual date of manufacture. As of July 24, 2026, vehicles manufactured on or before July 24, 2001 qualify for the normal 25 year exemption and no longer need Show or Display approval for NHTSA purposes. A model year alone is not enough when a vehicle is close to the cutoff.

Show or Display does not exempt a vehicle from EPA requirements. EPA has a separate provision for vehicles more than 21 years old, but the engine must be the same model and configuration as originally installed. State registration and emissions requirements also remain separate issues.

What changed in the 2026 list?

NHTSA’s current spreadsheet is dated March 17, 2026. It includes newer approvals such as the 2025 Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale, Bentley Batur, De Tomaso P72, Gordon Murray Automotive T.50, Lotus Evija and Nissan GT-R50. It also retains historically important approvals such as the R32 Nismo GT-R, R34 GT-R variants, McLaren F1, Porsche 959 and Subaru 22B STI.

This table follows NHTSA’s March 17, 2026 spreadsheet. The status column is our practical 2026 guide:

• Show or Display: the listed years remain under 25 years old.
• 25 year exemption: every listed year in that row is now at least 25 years old.
• Date dependent: the NHTSA row spans both older and newer vehicles, so the individual manufacture date controls.

A note about the R32 Nismo GT-R

The official entry covers 1990 Nissan Skyline R32 Nismo GT-R chassis BNR32-100000 through BNR32-100562. That approval remains part of Show or Display history, but every genuine 1990 R32 Nismo is now well beyond 25 years old and can use the normal age based NHTSA exemption.

Limited road use: 2,500 miles per year

NHTSA may authorize limited highway use for a vehicle imported under Show or Display. The odometer may not accumulate more than 2,500 miles during any 12 month period. The use is intended for travel to displays of similar automobiles and enough operation to keep the engine, brakes, lighting and other dynamic systems working properly. The mileage limit is a ceiling, not unrestricted personal use up to 2,500 miles.

How to apply

There are two different situations:

1. Your exact vehicle is already on the approved list: submit NHTSA’s application for permission to import that individual vehicle.
2. Your model is not on the list: first request a determination that the model is eligible based on exceptional historical or technological significance.

A complete application should identify the vehicle, its chassis or VIN, engine number, manufacture date, mileage, storage location and intended road use. Include clear photographs, production documentation, proof of the claimed historical or technological significance and insurance conditioned on the limited use if road operation is requested.

Before you buy or ship the vehicle

• Match the exact model, year, special edition and chassis range to NHTSA’s wording.
• Confirm the actual manufacture date if the vehicle is approaching 25 years old.
• Resolve the NHTSA and EPA import routes before the vehicle leaves its country of origin.
• Do not assume federal import approval guarantees registration in every state.
• If an original engine must be changed for EPA compliance, disclose it because the change may affect the vehicle’s claimed significance.

The latest Show or Display approved list was posted on September 22, 2022. The notable add being the N1 version of the R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R. 

If a vehicle is not on this list, then it has not been approved for Show or Display. Show or Display is a NHTSA or FMVSS exemption, but not an EPA or emissions exemption.  A vehicle 21 years or older is EPA exemption in original configuration

2. Vehicle identification – make, model, model year, VIN or chassis number,
engine number, date of manufacture and mileage.
